          FIRST AID

ANIMAL BITES

Check for bleeding or punctures.  Wash wounds with soap and water.  Apply Antiseptic.  DO NOT USE OINTMENT.

BLEEDING

Restrain your animal.  Press gauze or cloth over wound to control bleeding.  Tape gauze firmly in place.  If bleeding does not stop, increase pressure.

BREAKS

If  bones protrude, control bleeding.  DO NOT CLEAN THE WOUND.  Wrap entire bone with cloth or cotton batting.  Place splints on opposite sides of break and tape firmly in place.

CHOKING

Open animal's mouth wide open and pull out tongue.  Look in throat with light.  If you can see an object, grasp and remove it.  DO NOT PULL OUT THREAD, NEEDLE MAY BE ATTACHED.

HEATSTROKE

Hose or bathe your animal until symptoms subside.  Wrap ice in a towel and place around head.  Wrap in wet towel and place animal in a cool room.

SHOCK

Place animal on it's side on a blanket.  Open mouth and pull out tongue.  hold tongue to keep airway open.  Elevate hindquarters.  Cover with blanket.  DO NOT OVERHEAT.

INTERNAL BLEEDING

Restrain animal if necessary.  Keep animal lying down and lightly covered.  observe breathing.

ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION

Pull animal's tongue forward.  Place one hand on each side of animal's chest.  Using fingertips for small animals or your whole hand for larger animals, compress the ribcage sharply and the release.  Listen for air leaving lungs.  Make sure airways are not blocked.
